Breaking the Comparison Trap: How To Stop Decorating Your Ditch
Ever found yourself in a comparison spiral that left you feeling totally paralyzed? You're scrolling through social media when suddenly you're questioning everything about your life, wondering why everyone else seems to have it all figured out while you're struggling just to keep up. That's exactly where I found myself this week, and it almost took me out completely.
But here's the truth bomb I discovered: comparison can either be the thief of your confidence or the fuel for your growth—and you get to decide which one. In this deeply personal episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on how comparison has shown up in my own life and sharing the exact mindset shifts that helped me flip those feelings of inadequacy into motivation. You'll hear the fascinating story of how Sarah Blakely, founder of Spanx, chose to put on her "comparison blinders" while selling fax machines door-to-door and ended up creating a billion-dollar company. Not because she had special connections or advantages, but because she stayed focused on solving a problem instead of measuring herself against established players in the industry.
I'm also breaking down my game-changing 1% Better Rule—the simple daily practice that creates momentum when you're feeling stuck. Whether it's moving your body for ten minutes, replacing negative self-talk with compassion, or tackling that one task you've been avoiding, these small wins create powerful ripples in your life. Plus, we'll do a gut-check on whether you're "decorating your ditch"—making excuses comfortable instead of climbing out—and how to shift from living in fear to living in faith. You don't need their path, you need your pace. You don't need their approval, you need your own belief. And most importantly, you don't need to keep scrolling—you just need to start. Follow the show and leave a review if this resonated with you, and remember: you're doing better than you think just by being here and wanting more for your life.
Welcome to the she Lost it podcast. I'm Stephanie, and this is a space for you to lose what's been holding you back. Talk about real growth, find courage and step into the life you were meant for. Okay, friend, welcome back.
Speaker 1:So let me tell you about one thing that, almost straight up, took me out this week Comparison Yep, I found myself scrolling, spiraling, doubting, and I realized something. Comparison, well, it can paralyze you or it can push you, but you have to be the one to choose. So today I'm going to get real about how it's shown up in my life and how I have learned to flip it into fuel instead of failure. And here's what I want you to walk away with today I want you to walk away with some mindset shifts, to stop letting comparison steal your confidence. I want to help you turn comparison into inspiration. I'm going to share a real life story about how Sarah Blakely yes, the Sarah Blakely, the woman who invented Spanx turned doubt into a billion dollar idea. I want to help you with what to do when you feel behind the 1% better rule and how to use it every single day, and a gut check on whether you're living in faith or you're living in fear. So let's start with the comparison spiral. I caught myself this week thinking why in the world does it feel so much easier for them and why am I not further along in life? And in that moment I forgot whose race I was running. I let someone else's highlight reel hijack my reality and here's what I've learned Comparison. It can keep you stuck or it can call you higher. It's your choice.
Speaker 1:So take a second right now. Are you comparing yourself to others? Does that sound familiar? Is it pushing you or is it paralyzing you? And if you're thinking, okay, thanks, but what does that actually really look like?
Speaker 1:Well, let me tell you about one woman who turned her doubt into drive Sarah Blakely. You've probably heard of Spanx, right. Well, what you may not know is the founder, sarah Blakely. She was selling fa of Spanx, right. Well, what you may not know is the founder, sarah Blakely. She was selling fax machines door to door. When she came up with her billion dollar idea, she didn't have investors. She didn't have industry connections. What she had was a problem to solve, some pantyhose and a fire to figure it out. And instead of comparing herself to the women already killing it in the fashion and business industry, she stayed in her lane. She put her comparison blinders on and she used what she had, which was grit, creativity and persistence. She didn't wait to be chosen, she chose herself. And that's exactly what happens when you put your comparison blinders on.
Speaker 1:So ask yourself what would happen if you stopped waiting around to be picked. What if you just chose to pick yourself and get moving? So let's bring it back. When comparison creeps in, what are you choosing? Are you choosing to let it shrink you or are you choosing to let it stretch you? Because comparison it can make you bitter or it can make you better, and it's going to show you two things what you want and what you think you lack. So what if you flipped the script and asked yourself what is this showing me about? What's possible, and how can I use this to stretch, not shrink? Because here's the truth You're not behind, you're just distracted.
Speaker 1:So what would change if you focused on your next step instead of someone else's finish line, and if you're feeling overwhelmed, like, okay, that sounds great too, but where do I even start? I'm going to introduce you to something that I live by every single day. It's called the 1% better rule. You don't need a total overhaul in your life. You just need momentum. So here's how you can get one percent better today.
Speaker 1:Pick any one of these things and just move. Number one move your body for 10 minutes. Fuel yourself with water and protein instead of shame and guilt. Speak to yourself like you would speak to someone you actually love. Do one thing you've been avoiding, or choose connection over isolation, and write down your wins. Even if it's small, small wins, they create big waves. So pause and ask yourself what is your 1% today? Not 100%, not all the things, just one small shift. Name it, write it down.
Speaker 1:Now, after you've done that, I have to hit you with a truth bomb, because I've been there and I know what this feels like. Are you in a ditch and you are decorating that ditch? Are you covered up cozy? That's your home, right? Well, if you are, and if you've gotten comfortable in your own excuses and calling it a season, it's really just fear. It's called decorating your ditch, making it cute instead of climbing the heck out.
Speaker 1:So here's your gut check. Are you justifying staying stuck or are you moving, even if it feels slow? Think about it. Are you sitting in a place that you were only meant to pass through? Are you calling stuck your comfort zone? Because, listen, this isn't just about hustle, it's about faith over fear and doing it anyways.
Speaker 1:You can choose to live from your past, if you want to your past mistakes, or you can fail forward. And you can live from your future. And that requires faith, grit and determination. Faith in what you can't see right now, but what you can see for your future. Faith that if you keep pressing, one day it's gonna be your day, because it will be. And if you choose to take action every day towards your goal, the real win is going to be in the action you took and who you became along the way. The difference between the losers and the winners isn't failure. They both failed. The difference is who decided to get back up and kept on going.
Speaker 1:So ask yourself what is the future version of you doing right now? How are you showing up? What would it look like to start acting like that person today? Are you choosing to let comparison keep you stuck or are you using it as fuel to get better and to get closer to your goals, whatever they may be? Because you were meant for more, even if you can't see it yet.
Speaker 1:So I'm going to leave you with this. You don't need their path, you need your pace. You don't need their approval, you need your own belief. You don't need to keep scrolling. You just need to start, get up, go again, get 1% better today. And if this hits home, please share it. Send it to the friend who's also stuck in the scroll or someone who forgot that they were made for more. And listen. You're actually doing way better than you think, just being on this podcast and wanting more for your life. So don't quit, don't shrink. Go, do something great. And, if this spoke to you, follow the show and leave me a review. And remember, if no one has told you today, I believe in you. See you next time.
